Trask on Task
This will be the second straight week the Purple and Gold will be looking at a white-hot quarterback.
Florida senior quarterback Kyle Trask is having a great year. Here are some of his stats:
He is fourth in the nation in completions per game with 26.6, eighth in the land in completion percentage at 71 percent, leads the nation in touchdowns thrown with 38, is second in the country in passing yards with 3243, and second in the country with 360 passing yards per game.
There are no Florida receivers who are among national or league leaders in any receiving categories. It is because everyone gets a chance to catch the ball.
Florida has a lot of able receivers. Senior Kadarius Toney has 53 receptions for the season with eight touchdowns. He averages 12.2 yards per catch. Junior tight end Kyle Pitts has 36 catches for 641 yards and 11 touchdowns and averages 17.8 yards per grab for the year. Senior wide receiver Trevon Grimes has 30 receptions for the campaign for 413 yards and eight touchdowns. He averages 13.8 yards per reception. Junior running back Malik Davis has 51 receptions for 196 yards. Sophomore wide receiver Justin Shorter has 22 catches for 241 yards and three touchdowns. He averages 11 yards per grab. The Gators have 12 players who average double figures in yards per catch
Florida has not spent much time running the ball this season. Junior Dameon Pierce is the leading rusher on the squad with 417 yards on 85 carries, averaging 4.9 yards per run. He has three touchdowns.
The Gator offensive line has four seniors who have started off and on for most of their careers. The most versatile is senior center Brett Heggie who has also played the guard position in his career in at Florida. The Florida offensive line has allowed 10 sacks this season. They usually allow one sack per game.
Florida is not a great defensive team, but they are solid. The linebacking position is the strong point of the defense. Junior Ventrell Miller leads the team in tackles with 66, 38 unassisted. Sophomore linebacker Brenton Cox has four sacks and eight tackles for losses (tfls). Miller has 5.5 tfls. Sophomore linebacker Diabate Mohamoud is second on the team in tackles with 43, 20 solo. He has five tfls. Sophomore linebacker Khris Bogle has three sacks.
The Gators allow 5.6 yards per play, 3.9 on the ground and 7.4 through the air. They allow 381 yards of total offense per game. In days gone by that was a lot, but not the way teams play offense in the present.
The Purple and Gold will have to play their best game of the year in the Swamp Saturday. Otherwise, they will be looking at their first losing season in the 21st century.
*Note: Due to Covid-19, the playing environment is subject to change.
