Game 10

Record: 6-3, 2-3 in SEC

by Bryan Follins

The Arkansas game is historically a treacherous meeting for the Purple and Gold. It usually comes at the end of a physically and emotionally draining season, near the Alabama game. If Arkansas has a decent team, the Tigers have to give at least 80 percent of the effort given against Alabama. This year the Razorbacks are decent. Actually, they are a little better than decent. They are not great, but they are solid, with some interesting parts. Arkansas, when ready to play, is capable of competing with any team in the nation.

The Hogs come to Tigertown Saturday with the top rushing game in the league. They can run a run-pass-option (rpo) offense, which has historically given the Tigers problems. Arkansas has gained 2194 yards on the ground this season. As a team they average 5.3 yards per carry. They average 243.8 yards rushing per game as a team.

The quarterback is sophomore K.J. Jefferson, who is listed at 6’3, 245 pounds, but actually looks larger. Jefferson has run for 433 yards this season, averaging 4.7 yards per carry. He has thrown 16 touchdowns with three interceptions. Jefferson hands the ball off to some good running backs. Junior Trelon Smith has rushed for 476 yards this year, averaging five yards per rush. Freshman Raheim Sanders has run for 460 yards, averaging 5.3 yards per carry. Sophomore Dominic Johnson has rushed for 416 yards, averaging 7.4 yards per run.

These fellows run behind an offensive line with sophomore center Ricky Stromberg and senior right guard Ty Clary, who were picked as pre-season All-SEC members. All five of the Arkansas offensive linemen are returning starters from the 2020 season.

Arkansas wide receiver Brelon Burks is the third leading receiver in the league. Burks, a junior, is a big, physical receiver who has 799 yards in receptions. He averages 16.7 yards per grab. Burks has 47 receptions for the year with eight touchdowns. The second leading receiver for Arkansas, senior Tyson Morris, has 17 catches for the season.

The Arkansas tight ends are mainly used for blocking.

The Razorbacks are active on defense, especially at the linebacking position. Bumper Pool, Hayden Henry, and Grant Morgan make a lot of tackles. Pool, a junior has 87 stops, 27 solos. Henry, a senior, has 70 tackles, 29 solos, and Morgan, a senior, has 67 stops, 23 unassisted. Pool and Morgan have 5.5 tackles for losses (tfls) each. Henry has 7.5 tfls.

Senior edge rusher Trey Williams has six sacks for the season.

Arkansas gives up 351 total yards per game. They have allowed five yards per play, so they are not invincible.

It has been a turbulent season for the Purple and Gold. Yet, a bowl game and a winning season are within reach. A win against Arkansas would be a step in the right direction.
