Kneauxing the Enemy
Record 4-6 Overall, 2-4 SEC
Old Miss welcomes the Purple and Gold this weekend seeking to take a step towards bowl eligibility. The Rebels have four wins for the season. They have beaten only one team with a winning record, and that was Southeast Louisiana. Old Miss has been playing better over the last month, even though their record does not indicate it. Their last two conference contests have been losses to Texas A&M, 24-17, and 20-14 at Auburn two weeks ago.
In the loss to Texas A&M, the Rebels out gained the Aggies on the ground by a 250 to 165 margin. In the defeat to Auburn the Rebel pass defense gave up 340 yards. The Rebels found a way to remain in the game even though they gave up almost twice as many total yards to Auburn.
Old Miss is third in the SEC in total offense. Freshman quarterback John Rhys Plumlee leads the team in rushing with 777 yards. He is the seventh leading runner in the league, despite not playing in the first three games of the season. He averages 6.7 yards per rush. His running mate is senior tailback Scottie Phillips, who has rushed for 542 yards this year, averaging 4.3 yards per carry. Plumlee has ran for seven touchdowns, and Phillips has rushed for five scores.
The Rebels have not passed much so far this year.
Plumlee has passed the ball only 120 times with 61 completions and four touchdowns. He has thrown two interceptions.
Sophomore Elijah Moore is the leading receiver on the squad with 672 yards and four touchdowns. No other Rebel receiver has 200 yards in receptions for the campaign.
The offensive line is led by senior right tackle Alex Givens and sophomore right guard Ben Brown, both starters last year.
On defense, junior linebacker Lakia Henry has 74 tackles, 43 solo for the season. Henry had nine unassisted tackles against Auburn. Before that he had nine tackles, five solo against Texas A&M.
Ole Miss is second in the SEC with 27 sacks. Senior defensive lineman Benito Jones has five sacks for the year. Junior linebacker Sam Jones has five sacks for the campaign.
Sophomore inside linebacker Jaquez Jones has six tackles for losses (tfls) for the year.
Good teams have had trouble with the Rebels over the last month. They are beatable, but the Purple and Gold should not expect any red carpet treatment.
