Kneauxing the Enemy 2018

Game Two

Southeastern Louisiana

By Bryan Follins

Take the Money and Run

This is meant with no disrespect to Southeastern Louisiana, but this is a patsy game. The Lions are a Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) team. FCS teams are one division below a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) team like LSU. FCS teams historically have less talent than FBS teams because they give less football scholarships. To put it simply, FCS schools have less money than FBS schools, and they play these games with an FBS school because FBS schools pay them.

Another term for a game like this is pay-to-play, or pay to flay.

So, how much are the Lions getting paid to be flayed?

Southeastern has lost their only game this season. It was to Northeast Louisiana. The Lions gave up 208 yards rushing and 346 yards through the air in the 34-31 loss.

Lion senior linebacker Tamarcus Russell had 20 tackles, 10 solos, in the contest.

Southeastern did not run the ball much in their first game. They had 94 yards on 23 carries as a team.

Junior quarterback Chason Virgil threw for 358 yards and four touchdowns in the season opener. He completed 28 passes in 39 attempts for a 77 percent completion rate.

Juwan Petit-Frere caught two of those touchdowns passes. He had five receptions for 158 yards in the game. His longest reception was 59 yards.

So, how much are the Lions getting paid to be flayed?

Southeastern, being from Hammond, which is 35 miles away from Baton Rouge, will not have to spend any of their money in plane fare.

A note of caution. There are FCS schools which have beaten FBS schools. Perhaps the most notable occurrence was over a decade ago, when Appalachian State strolled into the big house at Michigan, and whipped the Wolverines, taking Michigan’s money in the process. Appalachian State almost pulled off another upset last week at Penn State. The Nittany Lions had to sweat out an overtime win.

Listed in the link below are some of the biggest upsets of FCS schools over FBS institutions.

In these games, teams like SLU have nothing to lose. Hopefully the Purple and Gold can avoid any serious injuries, and Southeastern can just take the money and run.
