Kneauxing the Enemy
Record: 7-4, 4-3 in SEC
Texas A&M has not been good during the 2017 season, and they have not been bad. They have been average. The season for the Aggies has not been right since an opening game lost to UCLA, when they blew a late 28 point third quarter lead and lost the game.
The Texas A&M stats are average. The Aggies are not at the bottom in league stats and they are not at the top. They are seventh in the SEC in total offense, fifth in passing offense, eighth in rushing, fifth in receiving, seventh in points per game, and seventh in tackles.
The Aggies are above average in one category, team sacks. Junior defensive end Landis Durham is tied for first in the SEC with nine sacks. Senior defensive lineman Jarrett Johnson has six sacks for the season. Junior linebacker Otero Alaka has five sacks. Sophomore linebacker Tyrel Dodson has five sacks.
Senior defensive back Armani Watts is tied for the league lead with four interceptions.
It is easier on an offense to stay out of second and long, or third and long situations against Texas A&M.
In their loss to Mississippi State, the Aggies gave up 228 yards on the ground. In their defeat to Alabama they allowed 232 yards on the ground. While losing to Auburn, they yielded 228 yards rushing. The Aggies allowed 202 yards on the ground to Ole Miss, even though they won. Texas A&M is not good stopping the run.
On offense, the Aggies average 168 yards rushing per contest. Sophomore Trayveon Williams is the leading rusher for A&M. He has gained 678 yards for the season, with a 4.1 yards per carry average. There is that word again, average. Williams did rush for 203 yards and two touchdowns in the first game of the season at UCLA.
Last week freshman Nick Starkel threw for 272 yards and a touchdown in the win over Ole Miss. He has been sharing the quarterbacking duties with fellow freshman Kellond Mond, even though Starkel was injured for half the season. The Aggies average 231 yards per contest passing the ball. Their leading receiver is Christian Kirk, a junior wide receiver who averages 59.2 yards receiving per game. He averages 12.8 yards per catch, and has 652 yards in receptions, with six touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Damion Ratley averages 22.3 yards per catch. He has 558 yards in receiving and five touchdowns for the season.
Sophomore left guard Colton Prater, sophomore center Erik McCoy, and right guard Connor Lanfear started the season as returning starters on the Aggie interior line. They have not opened holes for their backs on a consistent basis. Average.
Rumors are swirling about their head coach Kevin Sumlin, being fired Saturday. So, what frame of mind will the Aggies be in? Will they be average? Will they play their best game of the season? It will be interesting.
