Kneauxing the Enemy
Conference: Sun Belt
The Troy Trojans are the last non-league team the Purple and Goal will play during the regular season. They are nicknamed the Trojans, but make no mistake, they are not the Trojans which reside in Los Angeles. Yet, they do have a winning record.
Senior Brandon Silvers is the quarterback for Troy. His numeric performance has improved each year since he was a freshman. In his freshman season he threw for 1836 yards and 11 touchdowns, 2378 yards and 20 TDs as a sophomore, and 3180 yards and 23 scores as a junior. He did throw 12 interceptions, however, as a junior. Presently, he has a 64.9 percent career completion percentage.
Three receivers average double figures in yards per catch. They are junior Deondre Douglas, 12.3, junior Damion Willis, 12.3, and senior Tevaris McCormick, who averages 11.3 yards per grab.
Senior Jordan Chunn is the leading rusher for the Trojans this season with 302 yards. He has averaged 75 yards rushing per game this year. In 2016 Chunn rushed for 1288 yards. He had never rushed for more than 514 yards in any season before the 2016 campaign. He is also the third leading receiver on the team with 15 catches, averaging 8.7 yards per grab.
This year he has been working with a practically brand new offensive line. One returning starter is junior center Deontae Crumitie. He has been a starter since his freshman season. Senior Steven Rowzee started 12 games last year.
From an individual standpoint there is nobody who stands out on defense for the Trojans. However, as a team, they are second in the Sun Belt Conference in total defense and scoring defense. They lead the lead in rushing defense, giving up 95.5 yards per game. One thing is evident. The Trojan defense spends a lot of time in the opposing team’s backfield. They have a total of 29 tackles for losses (tfls) after four games. Nine players have two or more tfls.
The season is still young. There is time for improvement for the Purple and Gold. There is no time to look past any opponent, and that includes Troy.
