Game Two

Tennessee-Chattanooga

Record: 0-1

Pay to Play

Tennessee Chattanooga is a football championship subdivision-fcs-football team. Football teams in this category do not have the resources and talent of teams in the football bowl subdivision-fbs-such as LSU.

Translation: Tennessee Chattanooga is this year’s patsy for a pay to play home game for the purple and gold.

During the football season FCS squads visit FBS teams to get a paycheck. Hopefully, for the FBS team, they can generate enough money at the home game to offset what it will pay the patsy, er, that is, the FCS team, and not lose the game. So both sides get money, the FCS team usually gets the beating.

Tennessee Chattanooga lost its season opener to Jacksonville State, 27-13, last week. Mocs quarterback, sophomore Nick Tiano, accounted for 286 of his squad’s 294 total yards, including 218 passing, with his team’s only touchdown, a scoring pass. Tiano is a 6’5, 240 pound transfer from Mississippi State. He completed passes to eight different receivers last week. The leading catcher was junior wide receiver Joseph Parker, who had six catches for 56 yards, including a reception for the team’s only touchdown.

The main problem for the Mocs defense in the loss was giving up big plays. They gave up a rushing touchdown for 76 yards and a passing touchdown for 59 yards.

Tiano also threw an interception which was returned 52 yards for a score.

Big plays doomed the Tennessee Chattanooga.

There is no indication on paper or otherwise to conceive of Tennessee Chattanooga as a threat to the purple and gold.  It must be noted, however, a week ago, FBS Nevada-Las Vegas lost at home to FCS Howard, a 45 point underdog. It was the first time in college football history an underdog of that point differential won a game. LSU is no Nevada Las-Vegas, so an upset this weekend in Tiger land  is very, very remote.
