Knowing the Enemy
Record: 3-0 overall, 1-0 conference
League: Atlantic Coast Conference--ACC
The Syracuse Orangemen enter the game this Saturday against the Purple and Gold undefeated, with a 3-0 record. The Orangemen have not started the season with this type of record in 24 years. To put things in a better perspective, the last time Syracuse was 3-0, in 1991, this was the state of the world:
--The average cost of a gallon of gas in the USA was $1.12. The average cost of a dozen eggs was 85 cents.
--Apartheid was dismantled in South Africa.
--Serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer was arrested.
--Former U.S. postal worker Joseph Harris killed his former girlfriend and her fiancé, and two former co-workers at the post office in Rigewood, New Jersey, which resulted in the phrase, “going postal.”
--Freddie Mercury, former lead singer of Queen announced that he had AIDS, then died the following day after the announcement.
--The Rodney King beating and arrest was captured on film, which triggered a chain reaction of events which led to rioting in the United States and Canada.
--The Internet was first made available for unrestricted commercial use.
--Tim Berners-Lee introduced the “web browser.”
--Some of the more popular movies were: Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Hook, Sleeping with the Enemy, The Silence of the Lambs, and Thelma and Louise.
--Some of the more popular musicians were: Pearl Jam, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Queen, Metallica, Amy Grant, Janet Jackson, The Clash, Boyz II Men, U2, and Extreme.
That was the last time the Syracuse football had a start like this.
The current squad is a bit of a mystery. Their three victories have come over Rhode Island, Wake Forest, and Central Michigan, not your typical college football juggernauts. They have already lost their first string quarterback to a long term injury, and the second string quarterback, freshman Eric Dungey, is doubtful for the upcoming game after being injured last week.
The skill sets of the remaining quarterbacks will be a mystery to Purple and Gold, at least until Saturday.
The leading rusher for Syracuse is freshman Jordan Fredericks, who has rushed for 197 yards in three games this year. He ran for over 100 yards in the Rhode Island contest.
Sophomore Steve Ishmael, who has had injury problems, is the leading receiver with 144 yards this season.
The offensive line has four returning starters, led by senior center Nick Trudo, who has also been fighting injuries.
Defensively, two good players for Syracuse this season are sophomore linebacker Zaire Franklin and junior defensive end Luke Arciniega. Franklin has 17 total tackles for the season. Arciniega has four sacks this year. Junior defensive end Ron Thompson has three sacks for the campaign.
Sophomore safety Antwan Cordy has four tackles for losses, tfls, this year. Sophomore cornerback Corey Winfield has two interceptions on the campaign, one he ran back for a touchdown.
The defense has a penchant for tackling opposing players behind the line of scrimmage.
As a team, the Orangemen have not accomplished much from a team statistical standpoint in the Atlantic Coast Conference this season. They are in the mid to lower team statistical category in every area.
The notable exception is Dungey who completed at least 50 percent of his passes in every game this season, as well as being the second leading rusher on the team. He was injured last week, and it was first reported he would not play against LSU. Now, his status is listed as “doubtful.”
Syracuse, the mystery team, a team which has not faced a squad like LSU all season. The Purple and Gold get a chance to solve a mystery Saturday.
